Testing One, Two, Three

While the Rebels have enjoyed a solid fall on the fields and courts and look forward to the upcoming Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and more basketball games, all student-athletes are busy this week proving they are champions in the classroom as well, with final exams taking place.

"Every finals' period is different.  But after the success that all of our student-athletes experienced athletically, we wanted to encourage them in a different way." said senior associate athletics director for academics and student-athlete development, Derek Cowherd. "Our sports production staff is second to none. I came up with the concept and within days, it was done.  Of course nothing takes the place of working hard, attending class or studying and preparing all year, but this added boost should remind all students that we care about how they perform academically as well."

Basketball Rebels Hit The Books

College basketball players are mostly known for their abilities to make jump shots, drive to the rim or play lock-down defense.

What hoops fans don't see is the tireless hours that their favorite athletes spend being a regular student. Their daily challenge is to balance their duties of going to class, attending tutor sessions and completing homework assignments with their responsibilities to watch film, practice and compete at a high level.

This year was a banner year for Ole Miss Hoops in the classroom, as the program continues to make great strides academically during Andy Kennedy's tenure as head coach.

Here are some of the Rebels' academic achievements in 2011-12:

- Prestigious Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award, along with women's basketball, women's golf and softball

- Top multi-year APR score (990) among SEC men's basketball teams

- Perfect APR score (1,000) for 2010-11

- Everyone is currently eligible

- 2012 Spring semester team GPA: 2.41

- Current resident team GPA: 2.47

- Will Norman made the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll for 2011-12

- Will Norman made the Chancellor's Honor Roll for fall 2011

- Aaron Jones and Jelan Kendrick made the UMAA Honor Roll for spring 2012

- Six players raised their resident GPA this semester

- Four players had their highest semester GPA since being at Ole Miss

- Terrance Henry (criminal justice) and Steadman Short (general studies) earned their undergraduate degrees

- Nick Williams (general studies) completed his graduation requirements and plans to pursue a second degree

How can you have five straight top 25 recruiting classes and look as bad as Ole Miss has this year. Easy lack of coaching fundamentals. Look at Mason at Vandy, nothing but 2 and 3 star recruits out of high school and he developers players that want to win. Hugh freeze has 3, 4 & 5 recruits and he expects them to win because of what they were in High School. Mr. Freeze you have not been teaching the fundamentals of football or winning in life. Mr. Freeze you have quit on your players because you have some false expectations of what they are instead of what you can develop in them. Either do your job or quit. Oh yea, please quit running your smoke and mirrors offense, everyone has figured it out. Run a physical offense that can open up holes for your running backs and then your pass attack want require 12 are 14 four and five star receivers. Mr. Freeze you have problems and you need to know that you are not smarter than the rest of the coaches in the SEC.

Not every pass can be caught. Too low, too short whatever. Not every Kelly pass is perfect. Records were broken by receivers also. But they sre not going to catch every ball thrown. The loss to Auburn was not one players fault. You win or lose as a team.
