Diamond Rebels Open Fall Practice

After a rainout on Friday, the Ole Miss baseball team opened fall practice on Saturday with its first inter-squad scrimmage.

Senior right-hander Aaron Greenwood and junior right-hander Sam Smith got the starts for the Blue team and Red team, respectively, and the 10 pitchers between the two teams combined to allow just two runs.

Scoring for the scrimmage was broken down into three categories -- runs, bunting and energy -- and while the Blue team won the runs part, 2-0, it lost both the bunting and energy parts.

The bunt contest was situational before each half inning, with a batter at the plate and runner at first, and the energy part was based on communication, running on and off the field between half innings, running down to first base and overall energy.

Individually, senior catcher Will Allen and junior first baseman Sikes Orvis delivered back-to-back RBI's for the Blue team in the bottom of the first, and then it was all pitching and defense.

Head coach Mike Bianco was impressed with junior right-hander Hawtin Buchanan, who worked two scoreless innings, and freshman middle infielder Errol Robinson, who showed good range and a strong arm at second base and shortstop.

Another defensive standout was junior outfielder Braxton Lee, a junior college transfer from Pearl River, who threw out a runner at the plate. Behind the plate, Allen threw out a base runner at second. And to close things out, junior right-handers Josh Laxer and Scott Weathersby worked the final two innings for the Blue team and Red team, respectively.

Rebels React To NCAA Tournament

The Ole Miss baseball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament on Monday when it was announced the Rebels would be the second seed and face third-seeded William & Mary at the Raleigh Regional hosted by North Carolina State on Friday. They will play at 1 p.m. CT in game one of the regional, and it can be watched on ESPN3. Ole Miss will then either face host and first-seeded North Carolina State or fourth-seeded Binghamton in the second game of the tournament on Saturday.

The Raleigh Regional is paired with the Eugene Regional with host and national No. 8 seed Oregon, second-seeded Rice, third-seeded San Francisco and fourth-seeded South Dakota State.

A Special Place Called Swayze

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Swayze Field

When you step into Oxford University Stadium/ Swayze Field you can almost immediately tell that there is something different about this place. The first time I was able to walk through the stadium was in 2003, as a student manager. For two years I came to work everyday at Swayze field. I was lucky enough to come back to Ole Miss Athletics in 2008 and see that Swayze had not only grown in popularity, but also  in size. As a manager, I remember the detail Coach Bianco always showed when it came to aspects of the program, a characteristic he still has today. Even though the field is named after legendary coach Tom Swayze I believe the case could be made that Coach Bianco is the legal guardian. As a manager you begin to meet all types of people that love Ole Miss and in particular Ole Miss baseball. I remember the first time I met the late Ernie LaBarge, founder and long-time operator of the bullpen club. His love for Ole Miss baseball was unparalleled. The things he did for the baseball program are still shining through today. As the program continues to grow, so does the luster and aura of Swayze field.
