From the Tee Box at the 2016 SEC Championships

As the Ole Miss women's golf team tees it up this weekend at the 2016 SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, OleMissSports.com tagged along to record some of the behind-the-scenes action and each day will bring five observations from the round.

 Round Two - Saturday, April 16, 2016

1. Senior Hovatter Goes Low on Day Two
Alabama native Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) fired a 1-under par 71 in second day action at the 2016 SEC Championship. Hovatter, who is playing in her fourth SEC championship, carded her first round of under par on the second day and her 71 is the lowest round she's registered in postseason action. Prior to today's 71, Hovatter's postseason best was a 73 at the 2013-14 SEC Championship on the Greystone Founders Course. In fact, Hovatter's round of 71 is the best round for an Ole Miss player in the SEC Championship since former Ole Miss women's golfer Sara Grantham recorded two rounds under par en route to a fifth place finish in 2010. Hovatter entered the SEC Championship with a team-best 74.97 stoke average and has been Ole Miss' top finisher in the last five tournaments.

2. Words From Assistant Coach Drew Belt

Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes and assistant coach Drew Belt combine to make a great coaching tandem for the Rebels and Belt gave OleMissSports.com a few of his thoughts from today's round:

"I'm really excited about Martina (Flori). This is her best tournament of the year so far and it's her first SEC Championship as a freshman so it's really awesome to see her perform. Alison (Hovatter) also struck the ball really well today. She hit 15 greens and the green's she missed she chipped in. She has really performed well. As a team its lots of fun to see some smiles and play well and compete with some of these better players."

3.  Club of the Day

Some days you have a club that just gets you out of a jam or one that has been making some shots for you. As Alison Hovatter put it "My driver just kept me in play all day" Today, the Ole Miss women's golf team shared their "Club of the Day"

Maria Toennessen - 8 Iron

Martina Flori - Putter

Madisen Bentley - Driver

Alison Hovatter - Driver

Abby Newton - Sand wedge

4.  Looking at the Leaderboard

Ole Miss enters championship Sunday sitting in eighth place, moving up a spot after carding a 300 in the second round. Something interesting to look at is the squad's the Rebels are ahead of in the standings. Ole Miss entered the SEC Championship ranked No. 107 according to the Golfstat ranking but right now sits ahead of No. 26 Tennessee, No. 35 Vanderbilt and No. 48 LSU.

5. Saturday Attire

The Rebels donned a more traditional outfit for the second round of action. Ole Miss wore white sleeveless tops with light gray polka-dotted shorts. The outfit was topped off with a gray long sleeve top and navy hat.

Additional Tidbits:

Dinner Options: The Rebels have dinned at Kobe Japanese Hibachi and Steakhouse and Carrabba's after rounds while in Birmingham.

I Know You: The Rebels will be paired with Tennessee and South Carolina on championship Sunday. Head coach Kory Henkes knows a thing or two about the Gamecocks as she is a Columbia native and played for the Gamecocks from 2001-04.

Early To Bed: On this trip freshman Martina Flori is hitting the hay pretty early. She enjoys her shuteye and needs 8-10 to function so her 8:45 pm bedtime on Friday night was on the late end of things.

Looking Ahead: Ole Miss is sitting in eighth place entering the final round and should they finish in that same position it would be the best finish for the Rebels at the SEC Championship since a eighth place finish in 2010. Ole Miss' best finishes were in 1999 (Third) and 1998 (Sixth).

Round One - Friday, April 15, 2016

1.  Martina Flori Likes Big Tournaments

Freshman Martina Flori (Montecatini Terme, Italy) had a great first round of the SEC Tournament. The Italian, who is making her SEC Championship debut, fired a career-best 1-over par 73 to lead the Rebels on the round. The 73 was Flori's best round since her collegiate debut in the first round at the Memphis Intercollegiate where she fired a 75. When being congratulated by her coaches on her round, Flori commented, "It was a tough and stressful round, but I like big tournaments" Here's hoping that Flori can keep that momentum rolling through the rest of the tournament.

2. Sweet Home Alabama

Senior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) is playing in her final SEC Championship and with the championship being held in Alabama, Hovatter had an entourage with her during Friday's round. Her parent's Lou and Freddie were in attendance as were numerous family friends including some members from her home course back in Meridianville. #HovatterFanClub

3. Strong Start For the Rebels

Ole Miss fired a 301 in the opening round of the 2016 SEC Championships, which places them in ninth place entering Saturday's second round. It's a tight race at the top with just six strokes separating third through ninth places. Ole Miss' round of 301 is nine strokes better than its opening round last season and is the lowest first round score for Ole Miss since a 291 at the CSU Fall Invitational in October. Additionally, Ole Miss' 301 is the lowest first round score at the SEC Championships since a 284 in the 2010 championship.

4. Family Affair

For Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes golf is a family affair. She joined her brother Kyle Thompson, who currently plays on the Web.com Tour, and her sister Kacy Thompson in playing collegiate golf at South Carolina and throughout her coaching career her husband Kenneth and her Caryl and Steve can be seen with the team at many tournaments. This week Henkes' parents and husband Kenneth have joined the Rebels in Birmingham.

5. Rebs Rocked The Powder Blues on Friday

Attire is a big deal in the golf world and today Ole Miss sported powder blue tops and red skirts. The Rebels topped off their outfits with white hats and white pullovers.

How can you have five straight top 25 recruiting classes and look as bad as Ole Miss has this year. Easy lack of coaching fundamentals. Look at Mason at Vandy, nothing but 2 and 3 star recruits out of high school and he developers players that want to win. Hugh freeze has 3, 4 & 5 recruits and he expects them to win because of what they were in High School. Mr. Freeze you have not been teaching the fundamentals of football or winning in life. Mr. Freeze you have quit on your players because you have some false expectations of what they are instead of what you can develop in them. Either do your job or quit. Oh yea, please quit running your smoke and mirrors offense, everyone has figured it out. Run a physical offense that can open up holes for your running backs and then your pass attack want require 12 are 14 four and five star receivers. Mr. Freeze you have problems and you need to know that you are not smarter than the rest of the coaches in the SEC.

Not every pass can be caught. Too low, too short whatever. Not every Kelly pass is perfect. Records were broken by receivers also. But they sre not going to catch every ball thrown. The loss to Auburn was not one players fault. You win or lose as a team.
