Chadwick's Top Moments: No. 14

Countdown_15.jpgFor today's midweek moment, we highlight No. 14 on our list.  This features the run to coach Billy Chadwick's third NCAA Final Four appearance in 1999, which is also marked the third appearance in Ole Miss tennis history.

The road to the NCAA Final Four was an exciting one for the Rebels.  After winning the Oxford regional, the Rebels faced rival, Mississippi State, in the Sweet Sixteen.  The Rebels would take down the Bulldogs 4-2, advancing to face the No. 2 team, Illinois.  Despite losing to the Illini in the National Team Indoor earlier in the season, the Rebels would win the one that mattered most.  The Rebels defeated the Illini 4-3 to advance to the Final Four.  The Rebels would lose to Georgia in the semifinals 4-1, as Georgia proceeded to win the national championship.

The Rebels finished the season with a 21-6 overall record, 9-2 in the SEC, and a Final Four appearance.  Ole Miss ended the year ranked No. 3 in the country in the final ITA National Rankings.  This was the fifth time that Chadwick and the Rebels have ended a season ranked in the top 5 nationally.  It also marked the sixth straight season for the Rebels to finish ranked in the top 10. The Rebels earned 11 wins over teams ranked in the top 25 throughout the year.

James Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist (2nd year) were named All-SEC first team in doubles, as Shortall made the first team in singles as well.  This was the sixth consecutive year for the Rebels to have a player represented on the All-SEC first team.

The 1999 Final Four appearance placed Chadwick in elite company, as he would become one of three active coaches to reach three or more Final Fours.

On Friday we will advance to 2002, the first year for SEC Western and SEC Eastern Divisions.  Stay tuned to see how the Rebels fared.

I am not and never have been an Ole Miss fan. I am however a Coach Freeze fan. I like what he represents in today's world of big time sports and what he stands for in leading young men of today into a more responsible role. He is everything that Ole Miss has never had. I am on his band wagon winning or losing.

Gray pants with red and blue stripes on the legs have served Ole Miss football my entire life time. The blue on blue, red on red and white on white are hideous and UGLY! Leave the pants alone.
