With the team going through shootaround right now at Allstate Arena, here's a few notes, links and video for tonight's game against Gardner-Webb. Three things to keep an eye on... 1. Gardner-Webb is coming off a home loss Wednesday night against Lipscomb. The Runnin' Bulldogs caught an early flight to Chicago this morning and play tonight at Allstate Arena. 2. In DePaul's last two regular-season games the Blue Demons have outscored opponents by a combined 60 points. The Blue Demons defeated Seton Hall by 28 points in the last regular-season game of the 2011-12 season and opened the 2012-13 campaign last Friday with a 32-point win over UC Riverside. In between those two wins was a 14-point loss to Connecticut in the BIG EAST Tournament. 3. The Cancun Challenge features three games tonight with Gardner-Webb at DePaul, Howard at Iowa and Western Carolina at Wichita State. DePaul opened the regular season with a 91-59 win over UC Riverside at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Here's some additional notes, links, etc. from the game.
Noteables - The 32-point margin of victory marked just the fourth time in the last 25 season openers that DePaul won by at least 30 points. Friday's margin was the fourth-highest in the last 25 years. DePaul 105, Howard 61 (+44) on Nov. 20, 1999 DePaul 103, Chicago State 68 (+35) on Dec. 1, 1992 DePaul 114, Chicago State 81 (+33) on Nov. 14, 2010 DePaul 91, UC Riverside 59 (+32) on Nov. 9, 2012 - DePaul scored 91 points in both its exhibition win and the game against UC Riverside. In the exhibition game, the Blue Demons defeated Lewis by a 91-74 score. - Cleveland Melvin set a new career high with five steals against the Highlanders... his previous high was three on two occasions. - Melvin reached double-figures for the 49th time in 59 career games... he now has 943 points moved him into 51st on DePaul's all-time scoring list. - The game was the third of a basketball tripleheader at McGrath-Phillips Arena with the DePaul women's team knocking off Nicholls State in the Maggie Dixon Classic. Head coach Doug Bruno and the Blue Demons face Dayton tonight in the championship game. In case you missed it, Bob Sakamoto put together a great story on the legacy of Maggie Dixon. Brandon Young stopped by Thursday and gave us this recap of his experience at the Kevin Durant Skills Academy earlier this week as a camp counselor. Hey, what's up everybody! My name is Brandon Young and I play for the DePaul men's basketball team. I wanted to write about the experience I had at the Kevin Durant camp which was held in Chicago on the west side. I'm a junior at DePaul and I am a point guard from Baltimore, Maryland. It's not hard to tell who I am. I wear number 20 for the Blue Demons so if you happen to catch one of our games and see number 20 then you know that's me. But enough about me let's talk about the Kevin Durant camp. I will start off by saying that I wasn't the only one from my team to get invited to the camp. I was also with one of my great teammates Cleveland Melvin (Big East Rookie of the Year). Cleveland and I were very excited when we found out that we were going to the camp. After we found out that we were going to the camp we just felt so blessed because hard work really does pay off. A day before going to the camp our teammates gave us great confidence by telling us play your game and do what you do. So we arrive at the camp hotel so early that we were the only two there for like an hour straight because we stay in Chicago and everyone else had to catch a flight. Even though we were there so early our room was not ready so we had to wait even longer. Other college players started coming and getting everything situated with their rooms and we were meeting people we never met before. I thought that Cleveland and I were going to be the only two people there from Baltimore but I was wrong. C.J. Fair from Syracuse University walked in and it just felt like we was home because we all grew up playing against each other. There was a lot of great talent there as well such as players like Tim Hardaway Jr., Michael Snaer, Rodney McGruder, Solomon Hill, and much more. While we were at the camp the coaches were teaching us the things the pro's do when they work out and when they are getting prepared for a game. So we would go through all types of drills like shooting drills, dribbling drills, one on one drills, and so much more that will make our game much better. It was not easy at all because one thing they told us was if you don't work really hard you won't make it anywhere. I was hoping to see Kevin Durant at the camp but I believe that he was still upset from the loss in the final to the Miami Heat. I would say that I learned a lot from the camp and honestly say that I got better from the three days I was at the camp. Also, while I was at the camp I feel as though my jump shot has improved so much because just for those three days I was there the coaches really explained to me how to shoot and the right way to shoot. I would hope that it would carry over to the game for when we start playing again. That's how the Kevin Durant camp went down. If I had another opportunity to do it again I would love to do it. I want to thank my amazing coaches and teammates for all the support they gave me to go into that camp with a lot of confidence. Be safe and God Bless, B.Young. Earlier this week, DePaul hosted a group of Tiger Cub Scouts from the Lincoln Park neighborhood and met with Dave Corzine for a tour of the Sullivan Athletics Center before joining Mac Calloway and men's basketball player Jamee Crockett for some fitness and basketball drills.
Corzine provided a tour of DePaul's athletics facility with stops in the weight room and locker room before heading to the gym to meet Calloway - DePaul's director of strength and conditioning - and Crockett.
