HARNISH STILL REPRESENTING

Former (tear) NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish is still representing Northern Illinois, most recently on Monday at Halas Hall when he accepted the Mental Toughness Award from the Chicago Chapter of the National Football Foundation.  Harnish and Northwestern QB Dan Persa - who roomed together at the East-West Shrine Game in January - earned the award for the perseverance and excellence displayed throughout their college careers.

Harnish was introduced by NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren at the standing room only awards ceremony which was attended by a "who's who" of Chicago football, including fellow head coaches Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern and Tim Beckman of Illinois (formerly of the NIU vanquished Toledo Rockets), Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey and members of the McCaskey family, including matriarch Virginia Halas McCaskey, and Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delaney. The NFF Chicago Chapter also presented awards to six deserving high school football student-athletes and recognized the NAIA Championship won by St. Xavier in 2011.  Harnish's parents Ron and LeeAnn were in attendance to support the NFL hopeful.

Harnish's awards acceptance speech was the centerpiece of Fred Mitchell's recap of the event for the Chicago Tribune, where you can also see his entire speech.

Following the ceremony, the NIU contingent, representatives of other schools and special guests attended a dinner with the NFF Chicago Board members at Del Rio Restaurant in Highwood.

Harnish traveled to Indiana on Tuesday and reports to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine on Wednesday. Return to "Huskie Happenings" on Thursday for more on Harnish's combine plans.

HALL OF FAMERS AT PRACTICE WEDNESDAY

It was a star-studded day at Northern Illinois' morning football practice on Wednesday as not one, but two, College Football Hall of Famers were in attendance.  George Bork, who still owns 18 Northern Illinois passing records from his days' as the NIU signal-caller from 1960-63, was at practice with his wife Merlin and granddaughter Addison (5).  The Borks were especially interested to see current NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish again as Harnish has a chance to break many of Bork's 47-year-old passing records.

"I told [Chandler] it would be OK [if he broke the records]," Bork said with a smile. "I've had them long enough."

Following practice, Harnish, who needs 1,058 passing yards in 2011 to break Bork's career passing yardage mark, and the rest of the quarterbacks came over to greet the NIU great, who was a two-time consensus All-American and led the Huskies to the 1963 National Championship with a perfect 10-0-0 record.  Bork also visited with NIU offensive coordinator Matt Canada and assistant coach Tom Matukewicz.

Coincidentally, Wednesday was also the day that Tom Beck, one of the finest two-way players in NIU football history, chose to bring his grandson, Tommy, out to see the Huskies.  Beck, who played for the Huskies from 1959-61 and was a second-team All-American at halfback, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.  After his playing days, he went on to a very successful career as a college coach.

Beck and Tommy had the chance to visit with NIU safety Tommy Davis during practice.  The Huskies' safety told Beck he recognized his name from his locker, which carries Beck's name. Talk about a coincidence!

Both Bork and Beck, who were welcomed to practice in front of the team by NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren, said they remain Huskies, follow the team and look forward to the 2011 season.

The same could be said for the Huskies' program.

HUSKIES ZIP PAST AKRON

|
The last 10 days have been pretty good for the NIU football team. After the 34-23 win at Minnesota, Chad Spann earned honor after honor for his 223 yard day. Now with Saturday's 50-14 win at Akron to open MAC play, the Huskies are 3-2 with a three-game home stretch ahead of them.

Breaking news on Huskie Happenings: NIU has back-to-back MAC Players of the Week, as Chandler Harnish got the call today. He had a nice little Saturday... 16-for-20, 281 yards and three touchdowns nice. He took the fourth quarter off to make a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond. After the game, The Manning Award contingent was impressed enough to put Harnish on its "trying to make the list" list.
