On August 8, we wish happy birthday to three former Tennessee student-athletes. Former Tennessee men's basketball star Scotty Hopson, who shined in the NBA's summer league for the Miami Heat this summer, celebrates his 24th birthday today. Former Lady Vol swimmer Brooke Watson turns 22.

Today is also the birthday of former Vol football player Bill Nowling. Nowling, who lost his life fighting for America in World War II, had his No. 32 retired in his honor in 2006.

On Aug. 8, we wish Happy Birthday to the following from the Tennessee family: current women's swimmer Brooke Watson and former basketball star Scotty Hopson, who is set to play in Israel in 2012-13.

From the archives, Aug. 8 was the day football veteran Bill Nowling was born in 1920. Nowling, a fullback 1940-42, from St. Petersburg, Fla., a three-year starter under Robert Neyland and John Barnhill. Nowling started for three years for the Vols at fullback, and played in the backfield for the 1940 national championship team coached by Gen. Robert Neyland. The Vols lost just four games during Nowling's three-year career at Rocky Top, and the '40 team also added an SEC title to the trophy case. Nowling and fellow Vols Rudy Klarer, Willis Tucker and Clyde Fuson lost their lives fighting for America in World War II.
