Good Times for Vol Golf

The last few days have been extremely good for the Tennessee men's golf program.

On Friday, four Vol golfers compete in the 66th Annual SunTrust State Open Championship at the Belle Meade Country Club. Recent UT graduate Brandon Rodgers (pictured above) finished runner-up at the State Open with a 210 (-3). Rodgers shot rounds of 71-69-70. Making the week even more special, Rodgers celebrated his 22nd birthday on Saturday.

Former Vol golfer Marshall Talkington had a top 10 finish at the State Open, placing in a tie for 9th. The native of Jackson, Tenn., shot a 54-hole total of 215 (+2) with rounds of 75-71-69.

Current UT golfers Jack Smith and Grant Daugherty also competed in the 66th State Open, but failed to make the cut.

Rick Lamb was also in action this weekend at the Willow Creek Open in High Point, N.C. The former UT star made his first career start on the eGolf Tour circuit. Lamb finished in 3rd place after pushing the leader, Andrew Yun, for most of the tournament.

Lamb birdied on Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 to push him to 11-under par early on Friday, but a bogey-birdie-bogey stretch on Nos. 13 through 15 dropped him back down to 10-under par and out of contention for the event title. Lamb was tied for 2nd place heading to the tee of the par-4 18th, but closed with a bogey to finish his week with a 70 (-2).

One final note: Next week, former Vols Jay Vandeventer and David Holmes will begin their stints on the PGA Canadian Tour starting in Vancouver.

Members of the Tennessee golf team kept their games tournament sharp over the weekend by competing in Knoxville's Holston Hills Invitational.

Senior Darren Renwick, who won the two-day event in 2010, finished second this time by a single stroke to local product and former Lincoln Memorial golfer Craig Reasor. Renwick shot 68-70--138 for the tournament, one shot better than teammate and fellow senior Justin Walker at 68-71--139.

Renwick and Walker were two of seven current Vols competing. Brandon Rodgers tied for 12th at 70-72--142, and Rick Lamb joined Jay Vandeventer in a group that tied for 14th place. Lamb shot 72-71--143, while Vandeventer's scorecard was 71-72--143.

Marshall Talkington tied for 22nd at 74-71--145, with Danny Keddie tying for 30th at 72-75--147. Only Garrick Porteous of the current Vols squad did not participate.

In addition to the seven UT squad members, two incoming 2012 signees were in action and fared well. Alcoa's Grant Daugherty tied for 24th at 72-74--146, and Chad Merzbacher of Dublin, Ohio, shot 72-75--147 and tied for 30th.

In the professional ranks, former Vols star David Skinns competed on the Nationwide Tour for the second week in a row and finished 34th at the Stadion Classic in Athens, Ga.

Skinns began play this year on the NGA Pro Golf Tour and was second on the money list with $39,436 through April 22, having finished in the top 12 four times out of five starts. But he advanced to the Nationwide Tour's South Georgia Classic in Valdosta two weeks ago through Monday qualifying and tied for 18th place.

Skinns opened with 65 at the Athens tournament but then closed with rounds of 70-74-70 to post a 5-under 279. The Lincoln, England, native has made an additional $10,026 in two weeks on the Nationwide Tour.
