Happy Birthday - June 5: Boris Conkic, David Holmes

On June 5, we'd like to wish Happy Birthday to recently former tennis great Boris Conkic and golf standout David Holmes. 


A four-time All-SEC performer from 2008-11, Conkic is one of only four players in program history to record at least 100 career wins in both singles and doubles. He and John-Patrick Smith teamed up as seniors to form the 2011 ITA Doubles Team of the Year. Conkic now coaches tennis in his home country of Serbia and also plays club tennis in Germany.

Among many key wins, Conkic clinched the Vols' 2010 SEC Tournament Championship at Kentucky: 



Holmes, a native of Knoxville, was an All-American for the Vols on the golf course from 2007-2010. He turned pro in 2011 and is currently playing primarily on the NGA Tour. Here is an interview from earlier this year with the NGA:

Smith Reaches Quarterfinals at Edwardsville (Ill.) Futures

Former All-American John-Patrick Smith collected another straight set victory Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Edwardsville Futures in Illinois.

Smith, who had to win three qualifying matches over the weekend to get in the main draw, dispatched sixth-seeded Erik Crepaldi of Italy 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. He faces Michigan's Evan King on Friday for a spot in the semifinals. 

This tournament marks Smith fourth event in as many weeks and his final stop on his summer tour in the U.S. before returning home to Australia. 

In Slovakia, Boris Conkic lost his second-round match to top-seeded Kamil Capkovic 6-4, 7-5 at the Tatry Open. Next week, he will be a local favorite when he plays in a Futures event in his hometown of Novi Sad, Serbia.

Cincinnati Masters: Knoxville native Rhyne Williams, who lost in the opening round of the Binghamton Challenger on Wednesday, is headed west this week for the qualifying rounds of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. The tournament is an ATP Masters 1000 event and serves as the final tuneup for the world's top players before the US Open.

Following the stop in Cincinnati, Williams will compete in the USTA US Open Wild Card Playoff from Aug. 18-20 in College Park, Md. The winner of the eight-man field will receive a wild card into the main draw of the US Open.

Smith, Conkic Win First-Round Matches

While playing on different continents, John-Patrick Smith and Boris Conkic both got the job done in their opening round matches on the Futures circuit.

Smith cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 first-round victory over lucky loser Michael Hui at the Edwardsville Futures in Illinois. The four-time All-American now faces sixth-seeded Erik Crepaldi of Italy.

During tournament qualifying over the weekend, the Edwardsville Intelligencer published this story about Smith and his success this summer.

Meanwhile in Slovakia, Conkic also got through his first round in straight sets at the Tatry Open, beating Marko Danis 6-4, 6-4. Conkic, a native of Serbia, has played in Slovakia the last two weeks. He plays top-seeded Kamil Capkovic, ranked 400th, later today.
