When Beth Alford-Sulliavn was hired this summer as Tennessee's director of track and field/cross country, she became the SEC's first female coach over a men's program. As the UT Daily Beacon's Shane Switzer writes, that barrier was just one of many broken by Sullivan on her way to taking the reins on Rocky Top. With six Volunteers, including four from the 14th-ranked men's squad, set to take on the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend, get a glimpse on the career journey Tennessee's newest head coach has taken toward rebuilding this storied program.

Joe Sullivan of Metro Pulse penned this feature story on the arrival of new director of track and field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan, her impact on the program, and the plans for renovation of Tom Black Track.

Coach Sullivan's hire was announced on June 24 of this past summer and she arrives on Rocky Top after 15 years at Penn State -- eight of which were spent as the head of the dual men's and women's programs. She produced nine Big Ten championships in her tenure at Penn State. She produced 158 All-Americans and four individual NCAA champions.
