Did you know that with the selection of Tyson Alualu (Jacksonville, 10th overall) and Jahvid Best (Detroit, 30th overall) in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft on Thursday ...

For the first time ever, Cal had two players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft while no other Pac-10 school had a player chosen. Cal actually became the first Pac-10 school since 1970 to have two players selected in the NFL Draft while no other Pac-10 school had a player picked. The last time that happened was when USC defensive end Al Cowlings (Buffalo, 5th overall) and offensive tackle Sid Smith (Kansas City, 26th overall) were both taken in the first round and were the only Pac-10 players selected.
Cal was the only school from the Pac-10 to have a player drafted in the first round in 2010
Cal was one of eight schools nationally who had more than one player drafted in the first round in 2010 (Oklahoma 4, Florida 3, Alabama 2, Cal 2, Georgia Tech 2, Oklahoma State 2, Rutgers 2, Tennessee 2)
Cal has been the only Pac-10 school with a player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in two of the last four years ... Former Golden Bear tailback Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo, 12th overall) was the only Pac-10 player selected in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft

Former Cal football players defensive lineman Tyson Alualu and tailback Jahvid Best were both selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft on Thursday at Radio City Music Hall. Alualu was picked by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 10th selection overall, while Best went to the Detroit Lions with the 30th overall pick. Each player was the third selected at their respective positions.

We're proud to have had two players selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft and seven players taken in the first round in the last eight years," said Cal head coach Jeff Tedford. "I would like to think it means that we're recruiting talented players to the Cal football program that continue to develop their football skills once they are here at Cal."

Alualu and Best become the fourth pair of Cal players to have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft with the most  recent being the combination of quarterback Kyle Boller (Baltimore Ravens, 19th overall) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (Oakland Raiders, 31st overall). The Golden Bears also had two first-round selections in back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997. Defensive linemen Regan Upshaw (Tampa Bay, 12th overall) and Duane Clemons (Minnesota, 16th overall) were taken in 1996, before tight end Tony Gonzalez (Kansas City, 13th overall) and offensive lineman Tarik Glenn (Indianapolis, 19th overall) followed the next year.

Tyson Alualu's hometown paper the Honolulu Advertiser has had some great coverage on the former Golden Bear defensive lineman this week. We blogged about a photo gallery yesterday, but there is also a tremendous feature centering on his faith and a video of one of his workouts.

Cal football beat writer Jonathan Okanes, who covers the Golden Bears for the Contra Costa Times, caught up with Tyson Alualu today on the event of the draft. Here's what Cal's former defensive lineman had to say.
