CONGRATULATIONS CAPTION CONTEST WINNERS

|
As promised, we are set to announce the winners of last week's caption contest right here on the Bear Blog. After much deliberation, our decision has been made.

The following comment, submitted by wevegottheaxe68 was deemed hilarious, but after some in depth investigative journalism, sources have confirmed to us that this particular person is indeed a current student athlete at Cal.

While his entry, "Nathan Adrian doesn't need tiger blood, he needs only Bear Blood to fuel his domination" was thoroughly enjoyable, NCAA compliance does not allow for current offensive lineman Mark Brazinski to be rewarded the championship prize.

Instead, GoBears91's caption, "To be fair, in the future Cal should be made to swim up hill" will take home the grand prize of $25 to the faculty club here on campus because the absurdity of the caption is equal to the absurdity of the Bears' margin of victory.

The two runner-ups, who will receive an official Cal pennant, were Ken Go Bears, with "The Cal Men's Swim Team BEARly has any competition! Nathan Adrian BLUE past the competition for the GOLD!" and Troy Smith - and I hope this is actually Troy Smith - who delivered some enjoyable dry humor with this: "Either we are really far behind, or this is just embarrassing. Go Bears."

The three winners will be notified by email. Thank you to all who participated. If you didn't win this time around, fear not - plenty more giveaways are still to come on the Bear Blog.

CAPTION CONTEST WINNER - ANNOUNCEMENT COMING

|
Happy Monday, everyone. Thanks to all who participated in last week's caption contest. We'll be announcing the winners at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, so stay tuned.

Three different prizes will be going out - a $25 gift certificate to the Faculty Club here on campus for the first prize and a felt Cal pennant to two runner-ups.

BEAR BLOG CAPTION CONTEST

|
Here's your opportunity to contribute to the Bear Blog and win some free Cal swag - simply leave a comment listing what you think the caption to the photo below should be.

This shot was taken by swimmer Nick Trowbridge at the NCAA Championships in Minnesota last month. You'll notice that senior Nathan Adrian is completely destroying the competition in the 400 medley relay.

Adrian (freestyle) served as the anchor to a relay team that included Guy Barnea (back), Damir Dugonjic (breast) and Tom Shields (butterfly). While Adrian brought it home, the roar of "roll on you Bears" echoed from the more than 100 alumni and fans present at the meet.

So have at it and be creative. We have three prizes to give out - one for the first place winner and two runners-up awards. Let the best man or woman win.

FREE FOOD!

|
If there's one thing that could make watching Cal sports better, it would be getting free food for doing so. Fortunately for you, we have just that opportunity for you tomorrow afternoon at Hellman Tennis Complex.

At 1:30 p.m., the Bears will host the Toreros of the University of San Diego and Fuddruckers will be on hand dishing out free burgers to the first 400 fans there immediately following the match.

The day celebrates the late Jim McManus, a Cal tennis alumni and hall of famer, as well as seniors Pedro Zerbini, Bozhidar Katsarov, Jonathan Dahan, and Zach Gilbert for their last regular season home match.

Needless to say, we'll be there to grab a free burger and pull for the Bears. And there really is no reason for you not to be there too.

CAL VS. STANFORD - MORE (ALMOST) FREE STUFF

|
In case you haven't heard by now, the Cal men's basketball team is playing Stanford on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.

Thanks to the Bear Blog, you have an opportunity to go to the game for free (read this post for all of the details). The Cal athletic department must be in a good mood, because there's more good stuff coming your way on Saturday as well.

If you're planning on being in Berkeley for the game, you can pick up a "Beat Stanford" t-shirt for only five bucks.

Here's how: starting at 2:30 p.m., "check-in" on your Facebook for iPhone application (or at touch.facebook.com), claim the deal and show it to a cashier at the Cal Team Shop. If you use a Blackberry or Android, don't worry - if you "check-in" on your Facebook application and show that to the cashier, you'll get a shirt for five bucks as well.

If you don't want to hold out for free tickets - the winners will be contacted this afternoon - you can still purchase tickets to the game here. And if you're not able to be in Berkeley, you can chat with me live right here on the Bear Blog during the game.

Here are some iPhone screen shots to show you how to get a five dollar shirt.

CAL FALLS TO USC IN A CLOSE ONE

|
Earlier this year, Cal beat USC by a bucket, 68-66. The opposite true tonight following the Bears' second match up with the Trojans this season, with USC topping Cal 78-75.

The Bears played without star freshman Allen Crabbe for the second game straight. Crabbe has more time to recover from a concussion suffered against Washington on February 10 before Cal hosts UCLA on Sunday evening.

Despite the disappointing result for the Bears, I enjoyed much of the evening as I got to meet some of the ticket giveaway winners throughout the second half. As I continue to have giveaways - which, I assure you, I will - I hope to meet many more Bear Blog readers.

I will be back tomorrow with an exclusive look at the Bears' pregame routine that you won't see anywhere else, so be sure to check back in then. As always, you can follow the blog Twitter for all of your up-to-the-minute Cal news.

TICKET GIVEAWAY FINISHED

|
I am pleased to announce that I gave away 10 pairs of seats to tonight's game against USC at Haas Pavilion. That's right - 20 tickets were awarded to readers and followers of the Bear Blog.

Again, thank you to all who participated and to those who responded to my messages regarding tonight's game. If you keep reading the Bear Blog, you'll certainly have more opportunities to win tickets to Cal events.

For those who won, your tickets will be waiting at the white will call booth - which will open at 5:30 p.m. - in front of Haas Pavilion under the name you provided me.

Meanwhile, this photo should give you an idea where I'll be tonight.

The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. tonight. If you can't make it, listen or watch live online here.

If you are going to be at Haas tonight, tweet at me and I just might come say hello and talk Cal sports with you.

THE EASIEST TICKET GIVEAWAY EVER - CAL VS USC ON THURSDAY NIGHT

|
The header that you see above boldly states that the Bear Blog will be "bringing Cal sports to the fans."

In most cases, this will mean bringing you an inside look at the day-to-day activities of the Cal athletic department (as you can see below). In this special case, however, "bringing Cal sports to the fans" takes a twist: I'll be bringing Cal fans to the sports.

More specifically, I am offering you the easiest ticket giveaway ever. Really, I mean it. All you have to do is follow the Bear Blog on Twitter and retweet this post and you will have a chance to win two tickets to see men's basketball play USC at 7:30 tomorrow evening at Haas Pavilion.

If you aren't currently on Twitter (which, well, you should be), comment on this post you will still be in the running to win a pair of tickets to the game. I have plenty of tickets to give away, meaning I will pick numerous winners by tomorrow morning.

See? I told you this is the easiest ticket giveaway ever. Follow these instructions and I just might be seeing you on Thursday night.
