Cal men's golfer Eric Mina fell to Estanislao Guerrero in round of 32 match play Wednesday at the 99th California State Championship being played at the Rancho Sante Fe Club and LaJolla Country Club. Guerrero, winner of the recent 2010 Southwestern Amateur, needed a pair of extra holes to break a deadlock after each golfer won four of the 18 regularly-scheduled holes.
The playoff began on the first hole with both players making par, before Guerrero registered another par on the second hole while Mina bogeyed.
Guerrero was 3-up with three holes remaining in regulation but Mina forced the playoff by winning each of the final three holes. Mina never led in the match that Guerrero took his first lead on during the second hole of regulation when Mina double-bogeyed the par-four second hole, the same hole he bogeyed in the playoff. Guerrero also won the sixth and ninth holes to get to 3-up. Mina won his first hole of the day on the par-four 10th to get one hole back but lost it on the 15th prior to his dramatic comeback.
