NT's ultimate Frisbee team's wins at the Texas Open Sectional
competition in Austin on April 12 and 13 launched it to the No. 1
position and cleared the way to the April 25 regional competition in
Baton Rouge, La.
Ultimate
is a non-contact sport comparable to football with a flying disc. To
win, a team must reach a predetermined number of points, which are
awarded by catching the flying disc in the opponent's end zone.
The
team's first place win at sectionals placed it in front of longtime
rival University of Texas at Austin, which ranks No. 2. It also set the
team ahead of rival team University of Kansas, which is ranked No. 3 in
the Ozarks section.
For years these two teams have been ranked ahead of NT and kept it from winning a bid to nationals.
Members of the team said they are excited and overwhelmed by their win.
"Winning
sectionals is fantastic," said Glenn Morello, a Willmington N.C.,
graduate student. "It's incredible to be ranked No. 1 at regionals."
